FSU Weeks 1-2: 3DF

This was the first week of 3D Foundations. We began learning the basics of Autodesk Maya 2013 and working towards completing a 6 second animation over the course of the next 5 weeks. The course is accelerated, so deadlines match a real world production setting with long hours and high standards.  My teacher, Mr. Bagsby is a veteran environmental artist with a video gaming background that includes work for Electronic Arts (EA) on the award-winning Tiger Woods’  PGA Tour 2009 and 2010. Part of the class is an Asset Approval meeting in which we have our work critiqued through online conference with our teachers.

In typical fashion, I was nervous about the first assignment. For any who have explored the Maya interface, it is well known for being challenging with menus and sub-menus just everywhere. Keyboard commands are not only necessary to operate the program, but you need to know them intricately to move with any sort of direction or speed. Though clumsy at first, by the end of week two, I had secured  100’s on the first four assignments and a deeper understanding of the production pipeline.
